Missiles vs. Candles

Thursday, December 25th, 2008

Sometimes politicians make great statements, even if they have nothing to do with great actions.  Here is a great statement by Israeli President Shimon Peres on Wednesday.

(IsraelNN.com) Against his advisors’ recommendations, President Shimon Peres lit the fourth light of the Chanukah menorah on Wednesday night together with Sderot’s children at a community center of the rocket-ravaged town. “In Gaza, they light missiles. In Sderot, we light candles,” Peres addressed the residents. “From the moment that the missile attacks on Israel will cease, there will be quiet in Gaza and the border crossings will open. The sole responsibility to the situation in Gaza clearly rests on the shoulders of the Hamas,” the President added.

If you are reading this from the comfort of your home, without thought of missiles exploding through your roof, or at your children’s playground…count you blessings,
thank your Creator.
Greet your neighbors.
Hug your spouse.
Kiss your children.
Thank your parents.
Speak to G-d with real words.

In other words, light your “candles” and burst through the dark.

Rabbi Tovia Singer Lectures at 2008 Noahide World Conference

Saturday, December 13th, 2008

Below you can listen to Rabbi Tovia Singer’s lecture from the 2008 Noahide World Conference.

Rabbi Singer has a show on IsraelNationalNews.com and also is the founder of OutreachJudaism which does anti-missionary work on behalf of G-d’s people Israel.

Listen Here.

Hat tip to Ari.

Excerpts I especially enjoyed:

I’ll tell you this, if tomorrow the U.N. comes out with a resolution blessing you, supporting you, if Jimmy Carter next week comes out and blesses you, check your theology - haha! - because you don’t want the praise of the nations of the world, you want the praise of the G-d of Heaven.

I also enjoyed:

We know from the book of Genesis chapter 12 that G-d blesses those nations that bless Israel, that bless the Children of Israel, and curses those who damn our people, because in reality when they curse Israel they’re cursing the G-d of Israel.

So it’s really quite illogical for someone to say “I’m gonna put my hope with Rome.”  Hard to imagine how someone today would stand up and raise his fist against the G-d of Israel, after all we’ve seen mighty miracles here in the Holy Land.

So [what I've said up until here] are the two parts of the Gentile world that have turned their backs on the G-d of Israel.  And G-d will harden theirs hearts as he did Pharaoh.  And they’ll rise up to destroy Jerusalem.  And the Bible tells us in Zakariah chapter 12 that G-d will take even the weakest Jew, verse 8 & 9: “He will strengthen him like David even like the angels of the Lord of Hosts.”

But then there’s this third part, this other section of the Gentile world, who will choose the G-d of Israel, above every other god, above every other lord, above every other host.  And then G-d is going to refine them like gold.  That’s you, the Righteous Gentile, who chose the G-d of Israel.

Also I enjoyed this:

You recognize that the Almighty is working with the Children of Israel.  And you made a tough decision.  I would imagine that for many of you listening to my voice right now, walking out of a Church…You might have lost some family over that decision; to this day it’s quite possible that your mom won’t even talk to you.  Sisters have disowned you because you left The Assemblies of G-d, you won’t walk into a Baptist Church, and you won’t praise any other name than the G-d of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

I don’t wish any suffering upon you, but if you’ve suffered on behalf of the G-d of Israel, you’re alright.  I wouldn’t sell it on the open market, I wouldn’t put your suffering on eBay.  [But] the Almighty sees every pain that you’ve endured on His behalf, that’s uppercase H.  And you’ve decided to cleave to the Children of Israel.

Noachide Wedding in Penssylvania

Friday, November 21st, 2008

There is no “right way” for Bnei Noach to get married.1  Rather, the questions to ask are:

1) What action(s) on our behalf constitute establishment of our marriage
2) What ceremonies are fitting and appropriate for Bnei Noach weddings

The length of this post will give one example of how you might answer question #2.

To answer question #1:

The subject of Noahide marriage according to Torah is discussed in the book “The Path of the Righteous Gentile,” in the chapter on Sexual Relations:

“Under the Seven Universal Commandments [for Gentiles], a woman is considered to be a man’s wife when the couple has sexual relations [in the normal manner] with the intent2 that it constitute marriage.”

Source: (Rabbi Mordechai)

…My third thought was that I wouldn’t know what ritual to use. I wouldn’t want to use Jewish ritual – they are not Jewish, and are under no illusions on that matter. So what would I do?

On the other hand: Come on, how cool is that, getting to do a Noachide wedding?

So I emailed colleagues, who clarified that a rabbi is empowered to perform any wedding which conforms with municipal law, but who had no idea what ritual to use. I Googled “Noachide Weddings” and “Noahide Weddings” and came up with this page, but the contents made me uncomfortable; I really didn’t like their adaptation of key Jewish wedding elements – the berachah [blessing] on wine, the ketubah, the Chuppah canopy.

But some colleagues of mine urged me on, pointing out that it’s pretty rare for an Orthodox rabbi to have a chance to get really creative!

Then, as I talked to the couple more and met with them, they were so visibly sincere that I fell in love with the idea beyond the “adventure” level. It was a chance to help good people do a good thing, in a meaningful way. Isn’t that why I’m a rabbi in the first place?

So I developed a ceremony which drew on biblical themes common for Jews and non-Jews, and meaningful for a wedding.

Here’s what we did:

1) They had found a non-denominational chapel in a park, and we used that space. As they stood together, I sang the traditional Jewish chuppah songs of Mi Adir and Mi Ban Siach.

2) I then presented a dvar torah on the Torah’s history of marriage, going back to Adam and Chavah [Eve]. I explained the Adam I and Adam II narratives, using Ramban’s idea that one narrative is creation of the soul (unified) and the other is creation of the body (separate). I talked about why Adam and Chavah benefit from being of two separate bodies – the idea, expressed in various commentaries, that the man and woman complement each other with their strengths, and so accomplish things they could never accomplish as one unit.

3) They had wanted to give each other rings, and written their own declaration of love and faithfulness for the occasion, so they did that at this point. I had them say “Behold you are sanctified to me,” taking the first half of the Jewish formula and dropping the “according to the laws of Moses and Israel” segment.

4) They had wanted to have a toast with wine at this point, but I was uncomfortable because of halachic [Torah Law] issues which are beyond the scope of this blog, and because of the adoption of a very Jewish wedding practice. So I decided to use water instead.

I explained the biblical significance of water, tracing it from the water present at Creation, through the punitive water of the flood rolling back Creation, through the water in which Jews drowned in Egypt, through the punitive water of Yam Suf [Sea of Reeds], through water from a stone in the desert, etc. My point was the power embedded by Gd in this natural element.

We recited the berachah [blessing] on water together (the berachah itself – “that all comes into existence at Gd’s command” – being very appropriate for the occasion), and drank.

5) To close the wedding I adapted a tefillah [prayer] authored by Rabbi Yochanan, presented in Yerushalmi Berachot 4:1, to read as follows:

יהי רצון מלפניך רבונו של עולם שתשכן בבתינו אהבה ואחוה ושלום ורעות ותצליח סופינו אחרית ותקוה ותרבה גבולנו בחברים ותקנינו לב טוב וחברים טובים ונשיש בחלקנו ונשכים ונמצא ייחול לבבנו

May it by Your will, Master of the Universe, that You bring love and brotherhood and peace and friendship into our home, that You give us success and hope, that You broaden our boundaries with friends, that You establish for us a good heart and good friends, that You make us happy with our lot, and that we rise each day to find our hearts’ desire.

On the whole, it was a remarkable experience. I was moved by their sincerity, and by their respect for Torah and Jewish belief.

I’m glad I did it - not because it was unusual, but because it really was cool in a much deeper way.

*********

  1. That’s not to say there are not wrong ways for Bnei Noach to get married.  Every couple should speak to their local Orthodox rabbi.
  2. In general, intention is critical in Torah law.

Sukkot 2008 With Your Fellow Noahides

Excerpt from “The Noahide Commandments

By Rabbi Yoel Schwartz

It is stated in the book of Zechariah that after the Temple will be restored, during the holiday of Succoth all the nations of the world will make a pilgrimage to Jerusalem to bow down before G-d. (Zechariah 14:1-21)

It is worthwhile for a person to take his vacation during this time. By doing so, a Noahide can use this free time to study, to observe nature and to meet with fellow Noahides for mutual prayer with emphasis on world peace just as Israelites did when the Temple existed and, as sacrifices were made for the welfare of all the nations, to pray for the coming of the Messiah who will amend the ways of the world.

Therefore, Oklahoma B’nai Noach Society invites you to join them from

Mon., October 13, 2008 - Tues., October 21, 2008.

How Should a Noahide Prepare for Rosh Hashanah?

Thursday, September 18th, 2008

I admit I should have posted this 2 weeks ago, at the beginning of this month.  My apologies.  Please forgive me.

Rosh Hashanah is coming up quickly.Blowing Shofar at the Kotel

- The day that Hashem is declared Master over the entirety of Creation, including each and every one of us!
- The anniversary of the day homosapiens were imbued with the soul (the 6th Day of Creation), separating them from the animal kingdom!
- The day that the Creator judges the entirety of Creation!

How can you ensure a wonderful Rosh Hashanah when you stand before the King?

Just like marathon runners prepare many days in advance of their big day, so too must we prepare ourselves in advance.  In fact, we don’t even do teshuvah (repentance) on Rosh Hashanah itself - it’s all supposed to be done now, leading up to the day of judgment!

So here’s how you can get started.

1) Download and read the Rosh Hashanah Celebration guide by the Oklahoma B’nai Noach Society.
2) Don’t (just) make a “New Year’s Resolution” on Rosh Hashanah.  Instead, make and do your resolution now.
3) Take time each day to talk with Hashem.  Go over the past year.  Review your life.1

Below is the Table of Contents from the OKBNS Rosh Hashanah Celebration guide.

This wonderful guide they have designed with Rabbinic support is not meant to establish a single obligatory standard for all Bnei Noach.  Rather, it is a guide for those who feel that such a guide will enhance there connection to and service of Hashem.  This is important to understand, lest people mistake this for a new religion.
See “About this Book” page 3.

Will Mashiach arrive in our lifetime?

Guest post by Reb Ari

I recently verified this story from the grandson of the couple involved.

My friend’s elderly grandmother, Miriam, remarried a number of years ago to R’ Shalom. They live in Jerusalem. R’ Shalom is now in his mid nineties and in his youth he studied in yeshiva in Mir in Poland and had the opportunity to spend a week at the home of the Chofetz Chaim (R’ Yisroel Meir Hacohen Kagan, zs’kl). A few nights ago, in the middle of the night he woke and told his wife that the Chofetz Chaim had appeared to him in a dream and simply said that Moshiach will be here soon. The Chofetz Chaim said that it is time to get ready and to spread the message. My friend’s father (Miriam’s son) asked his rav, Rav Asher Weiss if this is something to take seriously. His response was that we are clearly standing right before Moshiach, and it certainly should be taken seriously and we should undertake to do Teshuva.

The second story I heard directly from the people involved.

There is a young girl about eight years old who needs a refuah (אביבא מלכה בת לאה) - she is currently in the hospital with loss of vision. Please pray for her. She has been in and out of the hospital for chemotherapy, and she has had multiple complications. A few months ago she had been in a coma for an extended period of time. When she finally came out of the coma, one of the first things she said was, “Did I miss the weddings? Did I miss Moshiach coming?” Her two older sisters were not engaged yet (I don’t even know if Aviva knew they were dating), but both became engaged and were married over the following few months. I was at the sheva brachos (post-wedding celebration).

May Hashem heal Aviva Malka bat Leah along with all the ill people of Israel with the coming of Moshiach, Amen.

Reb Ari wrote a beautiful inspiring song about the coming of Moshiach: To listen, click here

Lyrics of “Finally Here”
As he walked home from yeshiva,
a sound reached his ears
clear and majestic, unmistakably near
Joy filled his heart
HE’S FINALLY HERE!!! Moshiach’s finally here!!!
He ran all the way home
said to his dad,
“Did you hear it - the shofar
or am I going mad?”
“Not now, my son,
can it wait ’til later, when the business news is done.”

CHORUS:
Where is our hope, our faith, our pride?
Where’s the desire, the love deep inside?
When we say we want Ben Dovid to come
We can’t fool ourselves or the Holy One.

She heard it, at first faintly
a note long and clear
steadily the sound grew
’til it was all she could hear
Joy filled her heart
HE’S FINALLY HERE!!! Moshiach’s finally here!!!
She rushed to the kitchen,
got on the phone.
“Sister, can you hear it
or is it me alone?”
“Can you call back tonight?
I’m facebooking now, so I hope it’s alright…”
CHORUS

When we finally hear the shofar
After all these many years
Our emotions can run deeply
moving us to tears
Joy will fill our hearts
WHEN HE’S FINALLY HERE!!! When Moshiach’s finally here!!!

We must strengthen our hope, our faith, our pride.
We can find the desire, the love deep inside.
When we say we want Moshiach to come
We can reconnect to the Holy One.

Noahide World Conference: an interview with Ray Peterson

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

Guest Post by Noahide Alice Jonsson
Source: BreslovWorld.com

We need to…bring forth a true understanding of what a Noahide is, what we are to Hashem, what we are to the Jewish people and what we are in the redemption.”

In case you haven’t noticed there aren’t many Bnei Noach in the world. I joke that there are more pandas living in the wild than Bnei Noach. Yes, the numbers are growing.

Yes, we have many reasons to be optimistic. And yes, it’s quite rewarding despite the challenges associated with being part of such a, well, select group of individuals.

That being said, there are times when it’s great to be around like-minded people.

Noahide Nations — an organization for Torah centered Bnei Noach — has a unique opportunity for community building, Torah learning, and of course some schmoozing this [past -ihn] June in lovely Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. There they will be hosting their first Noahide Nations World Conference. I spoke with Noahide Nations founder Ray Pettersen about their upcoming conference on the eve of their move to their new headquarters in Dallas, Texas.

BRESLOV WORLD: Can you tell us a little bit about Noahide Nations?

PETTERSEN: Noahide Nations is an organization founded for Torah-centered Noahides and for those who are curious about the Torah – to let them know that they don’t need to convert for God to love us.

Our website (noahidenations.com) is really a melting pot of information and dialogue about Torah. There’s a forum section; a Torah learning center where people can log in and receive instruction from rabbis, Jewish women, educated Noahides — scholarly individuals.

BRESLOV WORLD: What’s the idea behind this international conference?

PETTERSEN: Well, it’s from June 26th to June 29th, 2008 in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. [For more information see noahidenations.com.] The idea behind the conference is two-fold and it’s pretty ambitious. One is to begin a serious unification process of the Noahide movement worldwide. In other words we need people who consider themselves leaders in England, Netherlands, Puerto Rico — all over the world — that will come to this conference. And we can begin to start this unification because right now we are just spread out pretty much all over the internet. That’s how we meet each other, and that’s all well and good. If it weren’t for the internet we wouldn’t be where we are right now.

Noahide Nations - Noahide Conference

I have people that are involved with Noahide Nations from all over the world, and that’s what we need to begin to do. And in doing that then the Noahide movement can begin to realize and manifest its destiny to become Righteous Gentiles and to spread Hashem’s truth to the nations. Yes, we are supposed to still learn and study under the rabbis. But certainly that doesn’t mean that Noahides aren’t able to learn that knowledge and to become teachers as well. So that’s part of it, to bring that unification process to a head to really make it happen.

BRESLOV WORLD: Can you talk about some of the community building aspects of the conference?

PETTERSEN: Yes, the other part — it’s a community type thing — is that the Jewish people — often times you can talk to a Jewish person and tell them you are a Noahide and they don’t know what the heck you are talking about. What’s a Noahide? There are many people out there who don’t truly understand what a Righteous Gentile is. Because of this, the reason I wanted to have it in the Ft. Lauderdale area is a town called Hollywood, which has a very large Jewish community.

I wanted to extend a hand, and receive a hand back — which I think I already have — from the Jewish community. Because you know what? We’re on the same team! Our roles are different, but we are on the same team. So rather than this idea that Jews are somehow better than Gentiles — and some Noahides being adamant towards the Jewish community — we need to eliminate all of that and bring forth a true understanding of what a Noahide is, what we are to Hashem, what we are to the Jewish people and what we are in the redemption.

And vice versa. Jewish people need to know who we are. The only way that will happen is by direct involvement by both parties. That’s one of the reasons I wanted to get as highly recognized rabbis to speak at the conference as possible so that a good many people from the Jewish community would make the decision to come, even if it’s just for one day.

BRESLOV WORLD: What else will be happening at the conference Bnei Noach need to hear about?

PETTERSEN: There’ll be an announcement about a Noahide home school association. Also, an International Noahide Torah Fellowship that we’re getting going. There’s going to be an ordination program where people can actually be trained by rabbis and by Noahides who are currently community leaders. Because we need to start sprouting Noahide communities all over the world.

As Sir Edmund Burke said so beautifully, “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil, is for good men to do nothing.” What we are doing is something. Now it’s really a matter of who wants to join on, who wants to get on board.

BRESLOV WORLD: Didn’t I see something about a siddur being unveiled at the conference?

PETTERSEN: Yes, a siddur for Noahides will be published and made available at the conference.

BRESLOV WORLD: I think many Bnei Noach are loners, sort of by default. What do you think?

PETTERSEN: Do something about the isolation. It’s really about this: once you know the truth, what are you doing with the truth? That’s what Hashem asks us. What does it mean to be a servant? Well, it means many things, but one of the things it means is to spread His truth. We have to be that vehicle that gets Hashem’s word out to the masses. To a large degree Hashem puts us through these experiences for this destiny.

Where and When is the Best Time to Become a Noahide?

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

HaRav Yoel Shwartz shlit”a says in his book “The Noahide Commandments”:

It is stated in the book of Zechariah that after the Temple will be restored, during the holiday of Succoth (Sukkot) all the nations of the world will make a pilgrimage to Jerusalem to bow down before G-d.

The following video is from sukkot 2006, when gentile families made their way to Jerusalem to accept the Seven Laws of Noah before the Beit Din of Bnei Noah.

The great sage, Rambam, writes that “Anyone who accepts the Seven Laws and is careful to do them, this person is one of the Chasidei Umos HaOlam (very pious of the nations of the world), and he has portion in the world to come.1

Rambam goes on to explain that this applies not when a person accepts the Seven Noahide Laws because they seem logical, but rather because G-d commanded them in the Torah, and taught them to the Jewish people through Moshe a”h.

Therefore new Noahides make the following declaration before a legal Jewish court (beit din)2:

“I Susan Richardson, do hereby freely take upon myself the commandments of G-d to Noah and his offspring and the covenant between G-d and Noah as pronounced in the Torah, given to Moses, as interpreted by the Beit Din of Bnei Noah (High Court of the Children of Noah) in Jerusalem.”

The next best place for Noahides to gather during Sukkot: OKBNS Sukkot 2008

  1. Maimonides’ Law of Noahides
  2. The court does not have to be based in Israel. It does some to be more meaningful, however, if one is able to arrange it to be done on Sukkot in Jerusalem. See Zachariah quote above.
Additionally, if greater numbers of Noahides gathered in Jerusalem during sukkot, it would be a massively greater “Kiddush Hashem” - Sanctification of G-d’s Name, since more people would see their righteous acceptance of the Noahide Laws according to halacha. i.e. it would be an inspiration to the world.

Gay Pride Parade vs. Noahide World Conference

Sunday, June 29th, 2008

Two major public events happened this past week.

Both were public gatherings.
Both happened on Thursday.
Both have symbolism in the rainbow.
And both are reflected in this past week’s Torah portion, parshat “Korach.”

Yet the core and essence of the two events are polar opposites, spiritually speaking.

What is the core and essence behind the Gay Pride Parade in Jerusalem?

This is a group of people gathering to display their personal and intimate lifestyle to the entire world. If they did not wish to show off and prance in front of the cameras, they would have been satisfied to hold their parade in Tel-Aviv alone (which they already had done earlier this year).

Yet they emphatically chose to override the majority of Jerusalem residents, and even the wishes of the Jerusalem municipality, who do not want their children exposed to such material.

They zealously fought in court for the “right” to put their intimacy on display in the city that is the center of Torah and G-dliness for Judaism and other faiths.1

In essence, their parade shouts
“Look at me! Accept me! Me! Me! Me! I demand my rights!”

On the other hand,
you have the righteous Noahides, whose gathering is rooted in something completely opposite of the Gay Pride Parade.

In essence, the Noahide World Conference shouts
“We love G-d! We yearn for G-d! G-d! G-d! G-d! We demand to know what our responsibilities are!

The core of the Noahide World Conference is Hashem.
How can the Noahide community strengthen their connection to Hashem.
How can the Noahide community fulfill their purpose on Earth as desired by their Creator.
How can the Noahide community live up to the name they bear, as descendants of a person who was completely righteous in his generation and devoted to Hashem.

As relates to this week’s parsha, parshat “Korach”:

The rebellion against Moshe and Aaron was rooted in Korach and his followers’ belief that they deserved to be leaders, just as much as Moshe and Aaron.

Yes, Korach was extremely learned, and extremely wealthy. He was probably a great and passionate orator as well. He concluded, therefore, that he was entitled to a position of leadership. The rebellious group’s focus was “Me! Me! Me!” I have a “right to be a high priest!”

Yet G-d demands and values humility in leaders. That is to say, leaders who have zero focus on self, and are entirely focused on Hashem.

We see today that most of the great Torah leaders of the world arrived at their position of prominence simply because of who they are. The great Torah scholars of our generation and previous generations ran no campaigns. They simply listened to those who asked for their guidance. They answered according to the Torah they learn. And they continuously refine themselves as did Moshe and Aaron in their days of devotion to Hashem.

May we all merit to be those who seek to know Hashem, and seek to live according to His Will and Wisdom. Amen.

  1. Just to make it abundantly clear: my point here is about the parade itself, not about the people who have to struggle with tendencies they are born with.  We all have our own inborn tendencies that we strive to overcome: haughtiness, anger issues, depression - and some people are born with tendencies in their intimate lives.  But just as no sensitive, descent human being would trample over Jerusalem’s holiness with an “anger” parade…so too.
