Hi, my name is Glenn Hefley

I'm working on the second novel in my Forever Jack series, and it looks like you might be able to provide an answer a question for me which I can't seem to discover. Hopefully you can give me a reference for the answer as well.

The Second Temple, first century Jerusalem; I understand that nearly 1000 sacrifices are being performed a day. On Holy days, even more. I also understand that these sacrifices had to be paid for with shekels (hence the money changers at the temple, changing the roman and greek coins for shekels).

My question is, did these sales, or purchases of sacrificial animals (lambs, calfs, doves), result also in a tax being paid to the city government, or to the Roman Governor? Such as a sales tax, and if so, who paid this tax? Generally, in this time period, I understand that a farmer or herdsman would bring his herd into the city, and be taxed for the entry of these animals at the gate. This would be based on the value of the animals... in fact this was the deciple Mathews job. However, the animals to the temple went directly to the Temple, who purchased them from the herdsman, and then sold them to the public.

Were they still taxed? and who paid the tax?

Any information you have or can give me a referance to, would be greatly appreciated.

Dear Rabbi,

Where did you get this information from?

I would be interested to read a more in-depth explanation from the nascent Sanhedrin, if you have the time.

Thanks.

Currently the Sanhedrin is debating the necessity of an oath for a gentile to terminate his/her exile from having a brit relationship with HaShem. Billy Jack Dial might soon travel and make the oath nefesh brit of not doing acts of theft oppression and incest amoung bnai brit peoples. A Torah oath not only binds the life of the Nefesh to practicing mercy ie hating theft oppression and incest, but by employing the Divine Name YA, the same Divine Name that HaShem employed to create the earth, the oath/brit creates the Nefesh soul from nothing.

What all humanity already has a soul? True, but the Talmud learns that the soul given unto all humanity at the moment of their conception, is a non bnai brit soul. This soul lives for as long as the body lives. A bnai brit soul lives even after the physical body dies. The Talmud teaches this as living in the world to come.
